Brian graduated as a doctor in 2020, having been sponsored by Green Olive Trust through high school and university. As a child, he walked to school barefoot because his widowed mother could not afford to buy him a pair of shoes. His eyesight was very poor because he was studying by the light of a kerosene lamp. Brian is now working in Litein Hospital and is hoping to return to Kakamega to serve his home community.
Malvine graduated in Agricultural Economics and Resource Management in 2017. She has done several volunteer jobs in different organisations. Her dream was to improve the diet and livelihood of her community by using greenhouses to make it possible to grow tomatoes at the high altitude of Kakamega.
Lavender received a bursary to study Communications and Public Relations and graduated in 2017. While still a student, she helped run an eye camp in Kakamega. Since finishing her studies, she has worked for Quaker Peace Initiatives in Nairobi and moved on to work in other NGOs. Lavender has joined the board of our partner organisation in Kenya.
Michael was sponsored through his Law degree by Green Olive Trust. He graduated in 2016 and went on to take professional law exams with another Green Olive Trust bursary. He is currently working as a producer and reporter for a production company making TV documentaries. You can see a wonderful video that Michael has produced to show how the Green Olive Foundation changed his life!
We already have strong connections with former students Oscar, Lavender, Julius, Brian and Malvine through our ongoing partnership with the Green Olive Foundation in Kenya.
We were delighted to receive news from Lavender who was keen to update us on how several other Green Olive bursary graduates are getting on.
Lavender says:
"We are very proud of all the Green Olive students who have already graduated. They have had mixed fortunes in moving into jobs. A few have gone straight into employment in their chosen career. Several have first gone through a prolonged period of unpaid voluntary work or internship before getting into paid work - this is particularly the case for teachers.
Recent messages from former students are all positive about giving back to Green Olive."
Here are some of the former bursary students' stories.

I am grateful and thankful for the unwavering support you gave to me whilst studying on campus. The responsibility you took was more like a parent.
May God bless you abundantly so that you may never lack, and that you may continue lifting the poor in the society."

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you so much for your great contribution throughout my undergraduate education. I am glad I got to finish school without any arrears, thanks to your help. I know there are many students who lack the kind of support you gave to me, and I do not take it for granted. I probably would not have had such a smooth journey without the funds considering the kind of tuition fee that was required. Today I am a graduate from an established institution in Kenya. I managed to complete my studies and graduated in 2021 with a second-class honours degree, upper division .I have been doing various businesses on my own since then. I'm doing great and all thanks to God and you guys. I now stay in Nairobi and work with a Solar Company as a customer service agent. It's not easy at all, but we are managing and really working hard. My wish is also to give back to the society and I usually do that in one way or the other. Thank you for sharing values you instilled in us. I am looking forward to furthering my studies in the near future. I also want to engage more in community advocacy. I am doing well, I cannot complain. God has been faithful."

I am one of the beneficiaries of the Green Olive Trust and Foundation.

"My name is Glenda, and I am a beneficiary of the Green Olive Trust. The Foundation supported my education from high school through my undergraduate studies. Through this support I was able to achieve my goal and I am currently a trained teacher of French. When the COVID pandemic hit, the Foundation ensured that we could learn from home comfortably through provision of laptops and other necessary equipment for learning online.
Because of the support from the trust, I am now a trained teacher of French and I am currently teaching in a private school. The trust's help and dedication towards my education has transformed my life. Education is essential for every child but due to the costs involved, it becomes hard for children from less privileged backgrounds to access it up to the tertiary level. I was privileged to get the much-needed help from the organisation. As a teacher I am determined to support my learners and possibly transform their lives. The Green Olive Trust came through for me and helped me achieve my dream, I'm grateful for their selfless efforts."

"The great family of Green Olive Foundation has done tremendous work in Kenya, especially in the western part of the country. The Foundation has elevated the lives of many in the fields of education, agriculture, medicine, engineering, economics, statistics just to mention a few. Many young people like me have become professionals through the effort of Green Olive. I feel much obliged to be associated with the excellent works of the Foundation. I was brought up and raised in family that had extreme poverty. I never thought of becoming an expert in the field of statistics and economics. Through the timely and tireless help from Green Olive Foundation, I was able to attend to my high school education at Musingu High. Four years later, I did very well in my KCSE exams paving the way for me to join Dedan Kimathi University. At the University level, the Foundation kept on supporting me in all the dimensions of university education. Through God’s grace and mercy, I successfully completed my university education and got a first-class degree in the field of statistics and economics. Due to this excellent performance, I was retained at Dedan Kimathi University to help in lecturing as an assistant graduate. In addition to that, I was offered a scholarship to partake my master’s degree in the same university. I completed my master's degree and I'm looking forward to pursuing my PhD in the soonest time possible. Life has certainly become so good to me, and I can no longer complain of the abject poverty. Back in the community, I serve as a role model to many who admire my academic excellence. I trust that one day, I will be able to give a helping hand to Green Olive Foundation to enable it to help more vulnerable but bright students. God bless Green Olive Foundation."

"I am very grateful for the generous financial contributions Green Olive has made in support of my education. Your generosity and help have been an inspiration to me.
I have made many achievements in my life, and I thank God. I graduated with an honours in education the year 2018. I have become a talented teacher of English and literature. I am currently an intern teacher looking forward to being employed.
Your generous help also motivates me to help others in need and I will definitely do so in future.
I am currently an intern teacher at Kwirenyi junior secondary a school in Western Kenya, Kakamega County. I am one of the pioneer teachers of the new education system in Kenya (curriculum-based competency) and I am proud. The school is at the far-flung area of the region, and there are challenges experienced from remoteness. Some of the challenges I am experiencing are, most of my learners are not able to understand English and it's the language for teaching. If some parents do not cooperate with the school I realise that it's because they might know the value of education themselves.
Another challenge is that most learners are from humble families and getting basic needs is a problem - we find it difficult to teach them while they are hungry.
Nevertheless, every problem must have a solution. Through the head of the school, I am able to call for parents meeting frequently and guide them on how they can understand the importance of education and also how to better take care of their kids. The good news is that many are responding positively. I believe God will guide me to manage the situation."

"I graduated December 2022 with a Bachelor Degree in Human Resource Management from Kenyatta University. I was able to achieve this level due to the Foundation and I am forever grateful. Since graduation, it has been a transformational period, trying to balance and grow. I have had a successful internship at the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, which has helped me learn from the practical aspects of the career, and it has also prepared me to be someone who can make an impact on society.
Currently, after the internship, I have been learning some soft skills online such as writing and content creation. As I keep on making steps, and relying on the hopes I have, I know things will come good. I’m always open to any form of leaning, I realise it really does create an impact in the future. I keep on looking forward to a successful future.
To the Green Olive fraternity, both the present and upcoming, I know we are destined for success. Let’s keep on looking forward to a successful future. I do really appreciate the support and may blessings and great health come your way."

"I currently work in customer Service where we get calls from clients and solve their problems if any, also we collect debts. I don't want to work here forever and that is my everyday prayer. I'm regularly looking for other opportunities because of the pressure of the work. We work for longer hours just to ensure that targets are met because if you do not meet your targets there is a possibility that you will be laid off and that is so draining, sometimes I forego going on leave just to stay at work. I fear being laid off without a perfect plan for what's next. But I thank God for the opportunity, so many people are jobless, and life is tough, so I'm always thankful for the opportunity. I hope that soon enough I will find something else to do and live my life in a more fulfilling way.
Covid era was so tough, by then I was just at home and making ends meet was hard. Being the sole provider at my place I had to do whatever job was there just to provide for my family. I came to Nairobi in the middle of all that and been here ever since.
Just trying to survive on the little I get though it's not enough, but it is sustaining us. Whenever I’m able to, I also help school going girls with pads because I realized that getting them is a challenge to most of them.
As for me I was only able to intern for a short period of time and thereafter we were told they can't accommodate us anymore, that was in 2019, I got a job as a waitress in a hotel and worked up to 2020 when Covid hit and we were laid off, that’s when I went back home.
My family is doing just fine, my mother and siblings are all OK and in good health, I try as much as I can to ensure that they don't lack. Pass my warmest greetings to everyone, we love you so much over here.
Thank you so much."
